NetObjects here... over the coming weeks I'll be sharing some tips, tricks and other cool stuff you can do with NetObjects Fusion with you through eFuse.com. If you like what you see here, and are interested in checking out more stuff on
Fusion, check out the Workbench
(an "officially unofficial" NetObjects Fusion tip site). Summary
Auto Update Fix: are your banners not updating when they should? Here's a simple solution.
One page at a time: want to publish a single page in NOF 3 or earlier? There's way...
In the Background: You don't have to sit around doing nothing.
Location, location, location: what happened to my location?
Any port in a storm: Having trouble FTPing. Try this solution.
Updating automatically generated banners and buttons
Occasionally, you may change the font settings (such as typeface, size, or even whether or not anti-aliasing is turned on for your computer) for the banners and buttons that NetObjects Fusion generates automatically. Sometimes, NetObjects
Fusion may not update all of the graphics automatically. To force them to update, delete the Preview folder under your site folder. This forces NetObjects Fusion to regenerate all buttons and banners.
One page at a time If you're using Fusion 4, then you appreciate the fact that it can publish a
single section or page at a time. But if you're using Fusion 3 or earlier, you must publish an entire site every time. Yes, you can click on the "Publish changed attributes only" box and then Fusion will only send the HTML files, not the
graphics it had sent previously. But it still has to send all of the HTML files, every time. The solution is simple—if you're willing to put in a little thought.
- First, publish your site to your hard disk. You must publish it, not preview it, because a published site contains correct relative links whereas a previewed site does not.
- Next, make note of the files that changed.
- Then you FTP the files to your server. Aha, you say, I don't know how to FTP. If you don't, it might be worth your while just to let Fusion do it all for you. It will take a few more minutes, but it will be done right, every time.
If you know how to FTP, or are willing to learn, then FTP the files that have changed, making sure you send them to the correct directory/folder on the server. FTP Explorer (
www.ftpx.com) is a simple and reliable FTP program for Windows that lets you drag and drop files from your
computer to your ISP's server.
Background publish When you publish a site, Fusion can
take a while to generate all of the necessary files. But you don't have to sit around doing nothing while Fusion is working its magic. Simply start publishing, then go to work in another program and Fusion will publish in the background.
Yes, your other program may be a bit slower than when you're working in it by itself, but you can still be doing your work while Fusion does its work. Setup - Server locations One or more server locations is missing from NetObjects Fusion 3.0 for Windows' Publish
Site dialog box, and from the Server Locations tab of the Publish Setup dialog box. What happened?NetObjects Fusion does not prevent you from defining multiple server locations that use the same name. However, Fusion will not save server
locations using a name that is already used. If you use the same name for more than one server location, Fusion discards the duplicates. Solution: Use unique names for each added server location.
Setup - FTP Port My company has changed the FTP port on our production Web server from the
standard FTP port of 21. How can I tell NetObjects Fusion to use this non-standard port for FTP when publishing my site? The Server Port is a setting available in the advanced settings in Publish view. To change the Server Port...
- Go to Publish View and click Setup.
- Select the Server Locations tab of the Publish Setup window.
- Select the remote Server Location from the list that you want to edit and click the Edit button: the Location Properties box appears.
- Click the Advanced button and the Advanced Settings window appears: there you will see the Server Port field.
- Change the port number as needed (for example 2001 instead of 21), and click OK until you are back out of the Publish Settings.
- The next time you publish your site, Fusion will use the new port specified for the FTP transfer of your files.
Note: check with your system administrator to verify the new FTP port before making a change.
