Covering Your Assets

You may never need to press the Assets button. You can build full, complex sites without ever looking into this special view. But if you're a power user and you want the most control, you'll use Assets to make global changes in a mouse click.

The Assets Manager shows you four things: All the files (graphics, Java, and ActiveX apps included), all the links, all the data objects (created by publishing a database using NetObjects Fusion), and all the variables (boilerplate text) in your Web.

Let's say your company or product logo graphic is on dozens of pages. Now you learn that the logo's been redesigned. Uh-oh. In any other program, you'd have to manually find each graphic and replace it (which, in the real world, means that you could miss a page and end up with an outdated logo).

In NetObjects Fusion, you click on Assets, double click on the graphic, and use the Browse button to select the new graphic you want to use instead. Boom. The graphic is changed everywhere it appeared on your site. There's not even a chance that an outdated graphic could slip through.

You also can use this view to locate where you've used certain files. Double click on the graphic name and you see a list of all the pages where that graphic appears. Click on a page and then "go to" and you're taken to that page.

Now let's look at Links. Links inside your site are always correct, no matter how many times you rename or move pages. Links to external sites on the Web, though, can change when those sites change. So choose Assets/Verify All Links and NetObjects Fusion goes out on the net and automatically checks all your external links to ensure that they're right—and makes it easy for you to change them if they're not. Once again, NetObjects Fusion helps make you look good.

You also can do the same kind of global "find and replace" with external links. So if you have a number of links to one site, then decide to change them to another, you can change them all in a single click. You can also "go to" pages that contain any link through this view.
