Site Seeing

by Sean Timberlake

Welcome to Site Seeing. Each issue I'll bring you a hand-picked handful of Websites that are chock-a-block full of information about a different topic that affects you, the Web builder. We surf through the junk, so you don't have to.

The Web's a big place, and we've got a lot of ground to cover. There are at least as many Web sites about Web building as there are movies about Hollywood (well, okay, maybe not that many). So if there are any topics you're just itching to see, let me know.

  • Web Development Sites: If you have to stray from efuse.com, check out these sites on Web development. We'll be here when you get back.

  • Color on the Web:  The world-wide-web is a carousel of color (if you're old enough to remember the old Disney show on TV).

  • Validate and Optimize: The number one way to lose a user is to turn them off with long downloads, broken links or code that's incompatible with their browser. These tools will help you streamline, validate, optimize and otherwise perfect your site.

  • Bells & Whistles: Take a gander at this collection of tools, toys and other titillations to add to your site, from news headlines to community builders to games and more. All are guaranteed to spice things up, and most are free, I tells ya, free!

  • It Takes a (Virtual) Village : Your users are more than a random selection of individuals. Well, maybe they're not now, but they can be. After all, they're all coming to your Web site, and as long as they have that much in common, why not get them talking about it? Online community is more than just teenagers in chat rooms - on a business site, it can add up to unsolicited marketing.

  • Setting Up Shop: E-commerce is exploding at an alarming rate, and you want to get on this bandwagon before it's too late. But where to start? Of course, you've already read my  story on e-commerce basics , right? Good. Now here's a handful of sites and services that will get you up, running and making money in no time.

  • Image-Conscious: What, you mean you don't have a full staff of designers churning out buttons, arrows and other images for your Web site? Of course you don't. And with these Web sites and their software packages, you won't have to, either.
